80th Independence Day in Noida: A City Drapes Itself in Tricolour Again

Ten years ago, we wrote the post below for India’s 70th Independence Day, back when Noida Diary was a much younger corner of the internet and this city looked quite different. Sector 119 was still filling out, Wonder Speedway was still open in what’s now Entertainment City, and a Sunday morning karting race felt like the height of Independence Day excitement.

A lot has changed in Noida since then, but scroll down and you’ll find the same gooseflesh at the flag hoisting, the same society lawns, the same excitement for the day that this city has never really outgrown.

As the Indian National Flag unfurls at the RWA grounds for Independence Day celebrations, I invariably get gooseflesh. It leaves me emotional every time the national flag is hoisted. I am sure this exhilarating feeling was experienced by all present and when I talked to my friends they confided in me about similar sentiments.

The celebrations took form of small gatherings at the society community centers at most places in Noida and flag hoisting in official and commercial buildings. The news-feeds of social media channels too were flooded with patriotic messages and celebratory notes. Certain events were organized at various places which we had written about in our earlier post. Noida Diary: Heavy Discounts and Sale Shopping on Independence Day in Noida

We particularly love the mall decorations and amazing sales run on the occasion. We had a gala time filling up our shopping bags at TGIP Mall, Gardens Galleria and DLF Mall of India. The discounts are quite a steal…some of these are running upto 70% discounted price on a variety of products – apparel, accessories, electronics and home furnishings.
